A long day

Today has been one long ass day. I'm worn out. I need a nap. I have to go help my Dad finish painting the inside of his house. So much for taking it easy. Oh well. Duty calls. Sigh....

A cool Thanksgiving story

There's a lady I work with who's younger sister was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. They have a huge family history cancer, which has taken the lives of most of the women and a good part of the men. My coworker (Debbie) actually had a complete hysterectomy when she was 17 due to cancer.

Because of the family history the sister has had routine check ups and they found it fairly early. She has undergone many rounds of chemo, and will start radiation soon. (All is going very well, the 2 tumors are less than half the original size now)

Anyhow, word got out to Corby's (the sister's) previous employer. The company banded together, raised money, and bought food for Corby so she can have a nice Thanksgiving. A cargo van full of food, worth probably close to $2,000. 2 24lb turkeys, 3 hams, cases upon cases of canned veggies. Eggs, bread, milk. Sugar, flour, salt. Stuffing, potatoes, yams.

Corby has actually had to store the food with 3 other people because she doesn't have enough room.

Now to me, this is just awesome. Their gift has nothing to do with food, other than to make sure she's eating nicely to keep up her strength. It's to keep her spirits healthy. When that van pulled up and the company president hopped out and started carrying in groceries she started to cry. She is completely taken aback at the kindness of people she hardly knew. It gives her one more reason to keep fighting.

Here's to you Corby... get well soon.

What's the gift rule in the office?

All this Christmas talk and budgeting is making me wonder about who to buy for in my office. Of course there's my boss, and his boss. The other 2 in my department are a given. But what about the others?

There's accounting, whom I deal with daily. There's production, which I deal with more than accounting. The receptionist, who is close to my age and I go out with on occasion. Sales, whose accounts I take care of. (some say it's their responsibility to buy a gift for me, not the other way around)

Now, in a perfect world I could afford gifts for everyone. That's just not possible. Does anyone have a suggestion here? I'm at a loss.

It's been a hard day's night...

And I've been workin like a dog. It's been a hard... well, you guys know the rest.

Anyhow, I've had this huge project at work that has kept me busy lately. I managed to get an order out that generally takes 3 weeks in just 4 days. Outstanding, huh?

I'm pretty proud of myself. Except that it kept me here until midnight last night.

It's cool though, the customer's happy. I guess that's all part of customer service.

Because of all of my glorious work I get to leave at noon today and start my weekend early. Nice, huh?

Wings-To-Go

Last night after a boring hour at the casino Ace and I decided to pick up some wings and beer and just head to the apartment.

Man... that was the best idea I've had in days. Those bad boys were awesome.

So here's what you do. Go to the restaurant, which is nicely outfitted with a big-screen for your TV viewing pleasure. Pick out how many wings you want, and based on the quantity you can pick a certain number of flavors. Ace and I got 30, and with that many you get 2 flavors. Hot, and honey BBQ. We ordered a side of potato salad, and in 10 minutes we were on our way.

Picked up some brews for Ace, and we were homeward bound. It took approx. 45 seconds after walking in the door to start devouring the wings. Oh baby... awesome awesome awesome.

We ended up with about 3 wings left over, and I can already see the rush at lunch to see who can get to the fridge fastest and claim those 3. Mmmmm........

Christmas, just around the corner?

It seems awfully strange to me that Christmas is just a mere 6 1/2 weeks away. I mean... it's 86 degrees outside.

I'm not complaining, as I absolutely despise cold weather. I love it outside right now. But how can I think of stockings and trees and presents and snow when it's almost summer out?

I plan on hitting the stores some time this weekend to get a jump on shopping, and hopefully that will get me more in the Christmas mood. Who knows... it'll probably need to drop about 50 degrees first.

Ah, glorious Mondays

Well, here it is, another Monday. La-di-freakin-dah.

My weekend wasn't all bad. Friday evening was a bit frantic. I was sent this way and that, running errands in the midst of 5 o'clock traffic. That really bit the big one.

Saturday morning was Taco's soccer game, and that was a blast. He was really aggressive and did a great job. While he was goalie the other team attempted probably a dozen goals on him, and only scored two. Not bad if you ask me.

Then it was nap time. Probably my favorite part of the entire weekend. After that it was off to Tulsa's Inedible Pizza. The kids loved it... I wasn't impressed.

Sunday I went out making a visual Christmas list for everyone. I found a few thousand dollars worth of stuff that I'd love to give out this year. Now all I need is an idea on how to come up with that much money. And I don't think I'm lucky enough to win the lottery.

The latest on Manders

Halloween went off without a hitch. The boys had an awesome time, and I must say, so did I.

They looked so cute in their little costumes. Tojo loved being Buzz. That dude is his hero. Any time I need the boys to chill out for a while all I have to do is turn on Toy Story. I don't hear a peep for 2 hours. They are both glued to the set. It's awesome.

Anywho, back to Halloween. Taco was Darth Vader. He is a Star Wars freak. He has way too many Star Wars toys to count. His spanish is coming along very nicely. Taco is doing great at his vocabulary, and had picked up a nice accent to go along with it.

Other than that, nothing is really new.
